The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended its Amasaman Constituency Communications Officer, Daniel Nortey, from all media appearances and public engagements on behalf of the party over his remarks on allegations of sexual abuse involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
The suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in place until further notice, according to a statement issued by the NDC National Communication Bureau on Thursday, October 22, 2026.
The decision follows public backlash over Mr Nortey’s comments during a televised discussion on ATV’s Anopa Bosuo Political Show on Tuesday, October 20, while discussing allegations of sexual abuse involving 19 female students.
In a statement, the NDC Communication Directorate said it had noted Mr Nortey’s remarks with “serious concern and distaste”, reiterating the party’s zero-tolerance stance on sexual abuse and all forms of sexual exploitation, particularly where the safety, dignity and welfare of children are concerned.
The party condemned comments that trivialise sexual abuse allegations or undermine the seriousness with which such matters should be treated.
It also acknowledged Mr Nortey’s unreserved apology but stressed that public commentary on allegations of sexual abuse must be guided by responsibility, sensitivity and respect for due process.
“Such matters must not be treated lightly or reduced to partisan debate,” the statement said.
Amasaman NPP calls for police investigation
The suspension comes a day after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Amasaman Constituency Communications Directorate called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate Mr Nortey’s remarks and determine whether there were lawful grounds for further action.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 21, the NPP described the comments as disturbing and argued that they appeared to trivialise sexual violence.
The party also urged the NDC leadership to take disciplinary action against Mr Nortey, including considering his suspension from his communication duties.
Additionally, it called on the NDC Women’s Caucus in Parliament and the party’s Women’s Wing to state their positions on the remarks and reaffirm their commitment to preventing the normalisation of rape and other forms of sexual abuse.
The NPP further urged the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to strengthen public education on consent, sexual violence prevention, survivor support and responsible communication on sensitive issues.
NDC reiterates commitment to protecting women and children
In announcing the suspension, the NDC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting women and children, promoting accountability and ensuring that allegations of sexual abuse are handled with the seriousness they deserve and in accordance with the law.
The party said the suspension would remain in force until further notice, barring Mr Nortey from representing it at media appearances and public engagements.
The controversy follows allegations of sexual abuse involving Zakaria Abdulai, the suspended headmaster of Obuasi SHTS and a former NDC Juaben Constituency Secretary. The allegations involving 19 female students are reportedly under investigation.
