The Ghana Education Service (GES) says continuing students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) are expected to return to school next week, following nearly three months of closure over disturbances on campus.

In a statement signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at GES, issued on Thursday, October 22, 2026, GES said preparations were far advanced to resume academic activities for the affected students.

“Management assures that preparations are far advanced for continuing students to return to school sometime next week,” the statement said.

GES added that first-year students had been in school since their reporting date on September 18, although continuing students remained at home.

The school has been closed to continuing students since August 5, following a violent incident involving students and the school’s headmaster, Abdulai Zakaria over allegations surrounding the discovery of a foetus in a bushy area on the school premises.

According to earlier reports, some students allegedly accused the headmaster of having knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the discovery, triggering a confrontation that escalated into violence.

The headmaster sustained injuries during the incident and was taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for further treatment.

The unrest also resulted in the destruction of school property, including damage to staff residences and vehicles.

Six students were reportedly arrested in connection with the disturbances, while the Ministry of Education directed GES to investigate the incident and ensure that appropriate action was taken against anyone found culpable.

The school’s closure was followed by further controversy over allegations of sexual misconduct involving the headmaster and female students.

GES subsequently interdicted Zakaria Abdulai pending investigations into the allegations and directed him to hand over the school’s management to the Ashanti Regional Director of Education.

The Service also indicated that it was working with the police to determine when the school could safely resume academic activities.

As of October 14, GES Public Relations Officer Daniel Fenyi had said the reopening would depend on whether the school environment was considered safe and conducive to teaching and learning.

The prolonged closure has raised concerns about the academic progress of affected students, particularly those preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

GES’s latest announcement offers a possible timeline for the return of continuing students, although it has not specified an exact reopening date.

The Service said further updates would be communicated when necessary.
