The Tema Port Expansion Project, delivered under Meridian Port Services (MPS), is set to strengthen Ghana’s position as a major maritime hub for West Africa.
President John Dramani Mahama, while commissioning phase I and II of the $1.5 billion project, highlighted the port’s modern technology, including its AI-powered operations.
“Algorithms show it how to manage the containers and make everything predictable, so that work goes on faster… several of those youth who developed the algorithm are working in this port, running the algorithm and operating it,” he noted, emphasizing the role of young Ghanaians in the project’s technological advancements.

The President also underscored the expansion’s impact on employment and skills development.
“Thousands of Ghanaians have gained employment during the period of its construction and also during its current operation, from engineers and technicians to logistics professionals, artisans and service providers and suppliers,” Mahama said, stressing the broad socio-economic benefits.
Highlighting the port’s strategic role, he explained that Tema Port now serves as a central transit hub for goods moving across West Africa, enhancing regional trade and connectivity.

Mahama praised the public-private partnership model that delivered the project. “Together, you have built more than just a port. You have built a legacy. You’ve built a modern, world-class maritime gateway that will serve not only Ghana, but the entire continent of Africa,” he said.
He also described the expansion as a blueprint for future national investments.

“This project is a model for the kind of future investments our nation must continue to pursue. Investments that are innovative, investments that are sustainable, and investments that are inclusive,” Mahama added.
