One of the leading Ghanaian women in Strategic, Digital Marketing and Brand Management, Mariam Kaleem Agyeman-Buahin, has been listed as part of the mentorship team to train 100 girls at the ongoing Girls in ICT programme in the Savannah Region.

The main goal of Girls in ICT is to cultivate the presence and digital skills of young women and girls [aged 12-24] in the career field of STEM, particularly ICT.

Thanks to the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation led by Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful for giving girls and young women in Savannah Region this massive push to acquire digital skills for life through the 1000 girls and 100 teachers trained.

According to Mrs A-Buahin, being one of the chosen mentors is an honour due to her love for mentorship and her passion to enhance digital skills in the young generation, especially women, in order to equip them digitally.

Regarding the mentorship event, Mrs A-Buahin revealed that “this training will bridge the digital divide between rural and urban populations, gender differences, and social differences.”

She said, “These gaps in connectivity and skills reflect existing differences in wealth and access to education, as well as gender discrimination. The digital divide also exacerbates these same differences by barring many people from the information necessary to break out of their current living situation, thus the priority of this training.”

The seasoned fin-tech professional also added that, after the training of the 100 girls in the Savannah region, she is convinced about the impact on education and economic opportunities for the community: “The digital divide can seriously impact economic opportunities for disconnected individuals and geographies. Digital skills impact girls and may be able to obtain higher-paying jobs. Additionally, they will have access to economic development. I will laud the ministry for this initiation to close the digital gap to increase economic opportunities.”

The mentorship team, which featured ten (5) prolific female professionals, including Ms Gloria Kwakyiwa Aggrey, Ms Lawuratu Saaka, Mrs Mariam Kaleem Agyeman-Buahin, Mrs Mariam Abubakar, and other great personalities, shared their career and personal journeys with the girls. The mentorship session was held on Monday, May 8, 2023, with the climax on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.
