The Government of Ghana has successfully repatriated the body of Bashiru Isak, the Ghanaian national who was fatally shot in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, South Africa, in an incident linked to ongoing xenophobic violence.
In an official update to its July 1 press statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Mr. Isak, a law-abiding father of three, was the victim.
With the consent of the bereaved family, the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria coordinated the repatriation. Mr. Isak’s mortal remains arrived in Ghana on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at 6:40 pm.
Family members and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received the body at the airport and has since deposited it at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
The Ministry announced that, following unsuccessful attempts by the High Commission and the family to obtain an official autopsy report from South African authorities, an independent autopsy will be conducted in Ghana after which Mr. Isak will be laid to rest in accordance with Islamic customs after the procedure.
“The Government of Ghana renews its demand for justice,” the Ministry stated. “We expect expedited investigations, arrests, and prosecution. There must be no room for silence or cover-ups in the gruesome killing of Mr. Isak.”

The statement further emphasized Ghana’s commitment to pursuing all appropriate diplomatic and legal avenues to ensure accountability.
The Government of Ghana extended its deepest condolences to Mr. Isak’s parents, wife, children, relatives, friends, and loved ones, noting that its thoughts and prayers remain with the family during this period of profound loss.
This tragic incident has heightened concerns over the safety of Ghanaian nationals and other African migrants in South Africa amid recurring xenophobic attacks.
