The Sunyani East Communications Officer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Baba Amando, has labelled his recent arrest and detention as “shame” and a direct assault on Ghana’s democratic values.
In an exclusive interview on The Verdict with Isaac Addai on Starr FM after his release, the vocal party communicator denied any wrongdoing and insisted that the reason for his arrest remains a “mystery” to him.
To him, his arrest and detention were not based on law but rather an attempt at gagging him and other opposition communicators believed to be fierce critics of the Mahama government.
”I don’t see what I have done wrong. Some people are pretending as though these things have never happened. Is it democracy? What representation? At what?” Amando stated during the interview.
Baba Amando and the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, were arrested and detained for publishing false news about government officials and a judge.
The two have since been released on bail.
Alluding to past instances where political figures, including former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, were subjected to harsh public satire and the alteration of their images, Amando, believed there was no justification for their arrest.
”President Akufo-Addo, at some point, his pictures were altered as though he was an idol. It was okay yesterday,” Amando remarked, questioning why similar vocal positions are now being met with police intervention.
To him, such actions, if allowed to continue, will be a as a threat to the nation’s political stability.
