The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has commenced a comprehensive maintenance and enhancement programme aimed at addressing distribution challenges and improving power supply reliability across its operational areas.
The initiative includes ongoing transformer replacement and system upgrade works in Tamale and surrounding communities, targeting network stability, low voltage issues, and frequent outages.
The programme follows a system-wide review of the distribution network, which identified critical infrastructure gaps, operational constraints, and service delivery challenges. These findings are guiding targeted interventions to strengthen overall network performance.
Key measures under the programme include vegetation control across 78 feeders, upgrades to overloaded substations, and the replacement of damaged and overburdened transformers.
At the Berekum Primary Substation, a new 20/26 MVA transformer is being installed to relieve an overloaded 10 MVA unit, while a similar upgrade is planned for the Wa Primary Substation.
At the Techiman Bulk Supply Point, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) is installing a 66 MVA transformer to further enhance capacity.
To complement these efforts, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition is procuring 500 distribution transformers for deployment in affected communities to address capacity constraints and improve supply stability.
NEDCo has indicated that temporary power interruptions may occur during the maintenance works to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment. The company assured that advance notice of planned outages will be communicated through its official channels.
Government has reiterated its commitment to delivering a stable, reliable, and consistent electricity supply through sustained collaboration with NEDCo and other sector stakeholders.
