Without NPP, major road projects wouldn’t exist – Kamal Deen Abdulai

NPP communicator highlights party’s role in Ghana’s road infrastructure expansion.

The Deputy Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Kamal Deen Abdulai, has defended the party’s record in road infrastructure development, insisting that successive NPP governments have delivered major road projects that Ghanaians can “boast of.”

Speaking on The Verdict on Starr 103.5 FM on Tuesday, May 5, he argued that Ghana’s current road network is significantly different from what existed in previous decades, attributing major improvements to NPP administrations.

“…I asked the question whether Ghana of 1957 is still the Ghana we have. No,” he said, adding that even key urban road networks have seen transformation over the years.

He referenced the state of the Circle-Ofankor stretch in the early 2000s, noting that commuting was extremely difficult before major works were undertaken.

“In 2000, when President Kufuor was voted for… travelling from Circle to Ofankor Barrier was a nightmare. Single lane, you could use four hours, five hours,” he stated.

According to him, that corridor was later upgraded into a dual carriageway with interchanges. “By the time NPP exited, we had constructed dual-carriage road with some interchanges around Alajo, running to Achimota Interchange… and then we now get to Ofankor Barrier, which we’ve done that work,” he said.

Mr. Abdulai also cited other road projects, including the Tetteh Quarshie-Adenta-Aburi corridor, which he claimed would not have existed without NPP interventions.

“Don’t go far, Tetteh Quarshie, Adenta to Aburi… but for the NPP coming to power, that would not have existed. It’s true… the NDC knows it. These are facts.” He said.

He further referenced road developments along other major routes, including Mallam, Yamoransa, insisting that successive NPP governments expanded road connectivity across the country.

“If NPP hadn’t come to power, it would not exist. And that’s a fact,” he stressed.

The NPP communicator also acknowledged earlier works by previous administrations, including portions of the Rawlings-era road network, but maintained that subsequent NPP governments built on and expanded those foundations.

“We came to meet Rawlings’ building, Kanda Highway, and all those places… then we proceeded with it,” he noted.

Touching on urban infrastructure, he cited the construction of the Pokuase Interchange as another example of the party’s contributions to modern road systems.

“But for NPP coming to power, Pokuase Interchange would not have existed,” he said.

He argued that Ghana’s development trajectory in road infrastructure reflects contributions from different governments, but maintained that the NPP has played a key role in delivering major national road projects.

“All these things are things that we can actually pride ourselves with as a country, that we’ve had some series of development,” he added.
