A 35-year-old man is in critical condition after suspected landguards attacked a government-backed telecommunications project site at Awutu Oshimpo in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.
The victim, identified as Daniel Larbi, is receiving treatment at the Swedru Government Hospital after being stabbed during the violent incident.
Residents say the community has long struggled with poor mobile network connectivity, prompting intervention through a telecom mast project initiated with support from local authorities and the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Agbotui Tetteh.
Construction of the project had reportedly been progressing with backing from residents and traditional leaders, including the local Odikro, who mobilised communal support.
However, tensions escalated when about 30 men on motorbikes, suspected to be landguards, stormed the site and ordered workers to halt operations immediately.
Eyewitnesses say residents resisted the move, insisting the project was a government initiative meant to improve connectivity in the area, leading to a confrontation that quickly turned violent.
“The group allegedly beat people indiscriminately, including elders,” one resident recounted.
In the chaos, Daniel Larbi was stabbed and left in critical condition.
The community remains tense following the incident, with some residents expressing fear of possible further attacks.
The Chief of Awutu Oshimpo, Nai Okogyeman Oshimpo, has condemned the violence and called for swift intervention by national authorities.
Police say investigations are ongoing, although no arrests have yet been made.
