The Upper West Regional Police Command has successfully dismantled a suspected motorbike theft syndicate operating within the region, arresting several individuals and recovering a total of 17 stolen motorbikes.
The breakthrough operation was triggered by a formal complaint filed on July 11, 2026, by a victim whose black Luojia motorbike, registration number M-21-UW 3512, was stolen from the premises of the Ghana National Fire Service in Jirapa.
The victim promptly shared details of the missing vehicle with friends and police, prompting rapid response from authorities.
Acting on credible intelligence, officers arrested Nasiru Muftawu at Loho while he was in possession of the stolen motorbike.
During interrogation, Muftawu admitted to the theft and was taken into custody to assist with further investigations.
Subsequent intelligence-driven operations led to the arrest of three additional suspects: Basit Muftawu, alias Posey, 19-years-old; Issahaku Maruf, alias Katel, 22-years-old and Mohammed Ali, alias Geewaa, 18-years-old.
Additional exhibits connected to the thefts were recovered from three other individuals: Rashid Kankan (20), Mutala Rashad (20), and Haruna Hamdan, alias DJ (20).
The sustained investigations resulted in the recovery of 16 more stolen motorbikes from locations including UBIDS, Chakor, and Glamon, all within the Wa Municipality.
The suspects have been arraigned before the Wa Circuit Court and remanded into police custody. They are scheduled to reappear in court on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
The Upper West Regional Police Command in a statement appealed to members of the public who have lost motorbikes to report to the Wa District Police Headquarters with valid ownership documents for identification and retrieval.
“The Upper West Regional Police Command wishes to assure the public of its unwavering commitment to combating crime and dismantling criminal networks,” the statement read.
“We also encourage the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing policing efforts in the region.”
