SLB expands healthcare access with new children’s ward in Takoradi

Global energy technology company, SLB, in partnership with the West African Rescue Association (WARA)—a leading private medical assistance and emergency rescue service in Ghana and West Africa—has established a children’s ward at the Kwesimintsim Government Hospital in Takoradi, Ghana. The commissioning event, held on April 9, 2025, brought together SLB and WARA representatives and partners, government officials, community leaders, and healthcare professionals to celebrate this milestone in improving pediatric healthcare in the region.

This initiative was supported by investment from the Sustainability Impact Awards, a global program launched by SLB in 2022 to empower local teams worldwide to design, select, and support high-impact, scalable, and replicable sustainability projects to communities. WARA acted as medical advisors on the project, with SLB implementing the construction of the 20-bed ward.

“At SLB, sustainability goes beyond operations. We actively invest in projects that deliver lasting value to the communities where we live and work,” said Julia Gridasova, Ghana Country Manager, SLB. “This project is a testament to our commitment to enhancing healthcare access and supporting local development in West Africa and globally. We believe in creating shared value that not only supports the health and well-being of communities where we work but also strengthens their resilience.

At WARA, we are committed to providing comprehensive healthcare services to communities across Ghana, and this new children’s ward aligns perfectly with our objectives,” said Abednego Akuteck, Country Manager, Ghana, WARA. “Through this collaboration with SLB, we can significantly impact pediatric care in the region, ensuring children receive the quality healthcare they deserve while addressing healthcare gaps in the area.”

According to the UN IGME Report 2023, children face unequal survival chances based on geography, socio-economic status, and conflict-related factors. In 2023, there were 4.9 million deaths among children under five, nearly half of whom were newborns.

Additionally, 2.1 million deaths were recorded among children and youth aged 5-24, with the majority in sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia. The new ward will provide essential healthcare services to children in the surrounding community, furthering SLB’s broader social investment strategy, which addresses local challenges while advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Beyond Ghana, SLB continues to invest in transformative healthcare initiatives across Africa. In January 2025, SLB partnered with ONE Campaign to install solar inverters across ten healthcare centers in Nigeria, providing reliable, renewable energy to ensure uninterrupted patient care in communities where energy access remains a critical challenge.

SLB’s commitment to strengthening healthcare and social infrastructure in West Africa continues—with plans for further investments in transformative projects that strengthen community resilience and well-being.

SLB is a global technology company that drives energy innovation for a balanced planet. With a global footprint in more than 100 countries and employees representing almost twice as many nationalities, we work each day on innovating oil and gas, delivering digital at scale, decarbonizing industries, and developing and scaling new energy systems that accelerate the energy transition.

The West African Rescue Association (also known as WARA), operates world-class in-country medical services including primary health care clinics, ground ambulance and evacuation, onsite pharmacy, laboratory and admission facilities within the Greater Accra region, Kumasi and Takoradi. The organization was founded in 2005 with the goal of proving that a high standard emergency system can operate in Ghana’s developing environment.
