UGBS Alumni offer free medical screening at Good Shepherd Orphanage

The Alumni Body of the University of Ghana Business School, UGBS, has donated food items and conducted a free medical screening for the Good Shepherd Orphanage located in Ofankor, Accra as part of their commitment to giving back to society by supporting children in need.

The items donated include bags of rice, tissues, t-rolls, toys, lunch meals, biscuits, yogurt, and first aid medications.

Members of the Alumni body also engaged the children in some fun activities whilst observing all the protection protocols of COVID-19.

Presenting the items to the orphanage, the First Vice President of the Alumni body, Richard Kofi Afenu Esq. reiterated the group’s commitment to providing for people in need in society, especially orphaned children as they have to rely on donated items for their daily survival.

He said, “this means that if people like us do not come here as often as possible, there is the possibility of food and groceries shortage here.”

Mr Afenu Esq. also emphasized the need to show love to the less privileged, especially to orphans. “It is very prudent that people realize that giving to loved ones is very important but the greatest gift you can give is to someone who cannot pay you back or reciprocate the love you give them in any way. This form of giving, though may look little in your sight, could change the lives of people forever. So if we need change, we have to start from somewhere.”

For the past four years, the Alumni Body of the UGBS has made a number of donations to some communities in Accra and intends to extend their support to other regions across the country.

The free medical screening include health education, general consultation, blood tests for Hepatitis B, HIV /AIDS, blood sugar haemoglobin, blood pressure check, Body Mass Index assessment, mass deworming, dietary assessment and counseling, and drug & supplement administration

In an interview with the Head of the Medial Team from StandOut Care, Dr Patrick Fynn, he noted that it is very important for children to receive regular medical screening for their overall growth and proper development.

StandOut Care is a subsidized mobile clinic that provides medications, health professionals and mass medical outreach to organisations, churches and individuals who want to extend medical screenings to their communities. The organization also provides one-on-one home care services as well as telemedicine services.

On behalf of the Orphanage, Rev. Nimako Boateng, Head of the Good Shepherd Orphanage expressed gratitude to the alumni team for their kind gesture.

“We are happy you drove through town to visit, not worried about contracting the virus, all for the love you have for us. The pandemic has affected us all and even though we are not a business, the businesses, NGOs and Civil Society Organsiations that donate to us regularly have been affected greatly and this has come a long way to bite us in terms of the donations we receive. So we are very grateful that despite this, you still came through for us. Thank you”, he said.

He described the activities to the orphanage as timely and ‘God-sent’ and took the opportunity to call on other NGOs to support the cause.
