V/R: Construction work resumes on Afiadenyigba-Havedzi road

Construction work has resumed on the Anlo-Afiadenyigba to Havedzi road in the Keta municipality of the Volta region, after several years of abandonment.

In 2013, the then NDC government began an initiative towards the construction of Anlo-Afiadenyigba to Havedzi roads, with the purpose of extending same to Weta and other communities.

The 26km stretch which was awarded to KAPPRA URC Company Limited, by government, has since stalled for well over seven years due to claims of lack of funds.

The nature of the road and the uncompleted culverts on it have caused a couple of road casualties, with the recent incident leading to the death of a 6-year old girl in March this year; a situation that generated agitations from notable groups including the Anlo-Afiadenyigba youth who demanded with an ultimatum, the return of the contractor to site.

Following the incident, the Keta Municipal Assembly intensified the process of securing funding for the continuation of the project.

On a working visit to the project site on Friday, 15 May, 2020 the Keta Municipal Chief Executive, Godwin Edudzi Effah, told journalists that the project means a lot to the economic activities in the area, hence the need to ensure its completed, while adding that, “We’ll not rest until work is complete.”

“As the contractors have come now, we expect them to construct the road from Havedzi up to Anlo-Afiadenyigba Junction, which is about 11Km and continue from there to Ave-Hevi, another 15Km. From now till March 2021, we don’t expect them to leave site because enough funding has been secured for the project,” he stated.

Already, there has been significant work done on the uncompleted culverts to allow for easy passage by motorists on the 11km Afiadenyigba-Havedzi stretch.

The project manager, Torgbui Kpemba III assured that the company would ensure that quality work is done on the road; explaining that lack of funding is to be blamed for the delay.

He added that, “We expect that the project is completed in 12 months time but what we can promise is quality work delivery,” he assured.

Some drivers who spoke to the media indicated their frustrations over the deplorable state of the road but are excited that the contractor have returned to site.
