Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has attributed the prolonged downtime of a ferry on the Volta Lake to difficulties in sourcing spare parts.
The ferry, operated by the Volta Lake Transport Company, has been out of service for months, leaving residents of Afram Plains stranded.
Speaking at the Public Accounts Committee, the Managing Director of the Volta Lake Transport Company, Angela Tay, apologized to affected residents for the inconvenience caused.
After the proceedings, Minister Nikpe told the media that the government is exploring all options to restore the ferry.
He highlighted that developing lake transport is a key strategy to ease pressure on the country’s roads and disclosed that the government is considering partnerships with the private sector to revamp lake transport services.
