Effiduase Asokore MP, Dr. Ayew Afriyie says the Minority side has yet to start holding government accountable, noting that previous actions has merely been standard on the opposition’s part.
Speaking with Joshua Kodjo Mensah on State of Affairs on Monday, June 16, he said the actual period of accountability starts when the Minority weighs political promises against what has been achieved.
“The Minority has not started holding you [the government] to account.” Asked if he and his colleagues really had not, he responded, “Have you seen us using their manifesto against them? We are only doing the business of the day. Agree and disagree. Accountability is when we state the many things they said they will do with the economy and we will check it.”

Although he admitted that the Mahama administration was still in its formative phase, he noted that time was of the essence as “Ghanaians are not always waiting” for the campaign pledges to be delivered.
The lawmaker argued that reality had dawned on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and they were realizing governing was an uphill task.
During the interview, he did endorse the initiative of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund but urged government not to limit the beneficiaries to individuals with complicated health conditions.
He also waded into the the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMMA) scheduled labour talks with government, calling the demands of the nurses “reasonable”.
Dr. Afriyie said the nurses had compromised on a significant number of their initial demands, the reasons for which they stayed home for nearly two weeks.
