We’ll hold the incoming gov’t to its promises – Iddrisu

The incoming minority leader of the seventh parliament under the Fourth Republic, Haruna Iddrisu, has stated that the minority will hold Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration to the “letter and spirit” of the pledges he made to Ghanaians during the electioneering.

Also, he said they will “endeavor to hold the strong values and philosophies of the NDC and demonstrate to the Ghanaian [populace] our policy options and where necessary offer criticism” in order to put the incoming administration on its toes.

Mr. Iddrisu who is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South further stated that he looks forward to working with his colleague parliamentarians from both sides of the house to deepen the governance process of the country.

“But you can be certain…that we’ll hold the new administration to the letter and spirit of whatever they campaigned on,” he said in an interview on Thursday on Joy FM.

According to him, he expects horrendous policy failures from the Akufo-Addo-led NPP administration pledging that they would endevour to do their utmost best in the interest of Ghanaians.

Thanking the leadership of the NDC and his colleague parliamentarians for the honour done him, he said he commands the experience to deliver to expectation and that he prays to God that he does not let the people of Ghana down.

Defending NDC’s record

The outgoing minister of labour added that apart from holding the Akufo-Addo government strictly to its promises, they will also strenuously defend the legacy of the outgoing Mahama administration.

“We are proud of our records. We are proud of many of the interventions as much as we respect the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people. They know better why they wanted us to be on the opposite side of the House,” he said.

Mr. Iddrisu was named as the leader for the minority side in the next parliament on Thursday.

According to Starrfmonline.com sources, the 46-year-old lawyer will be deputized by the MP for Ketu North, James Klutse Avedzi.

Meanwhile, the former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya Professor Mike Ocquaye is expected to be confirmed as the Speaker of the next Parliament.

Mr. Ocquaye will be deputized by Joe Osei Wusu, MP for Bekwai while current Majority Leader Alban Bagbin becomes the second deputy Speaker of the House in the Seventh Parliament starting January 7, 2017.

Asawase MP Mohammed Muntaka, maintains his position as the Chief Whip, while Member of Parliament for Banda Ahmard Ibrahim, and the Member of Parliament for Ada East, Hon. Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, serving as deputy chief whips.

Current Minority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu  becomes the Majority Leader assisted by Adwoa Sarfo Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya.
