The Western Central Regional Police Command has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining, arresting thirteen (13) suspects and disabling more than 120 changfang machines in a major operation at Wassa Gyapa.
The operation, carried out on Monday, May 19, 2025, is part of the Ghana Police Service’s sustained efforts to curb illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the Western Region.
The arrested suspects include Nana Ampadu, Stephen Tetteh, Yaw Dalame, Samuel Amoah, Kwame Oppong, Francis Oduom, Owusu Asare, Atta Kwame, Apiyanga Emmanuel, Kojo Montanakito, Maxwell Owusu, Obofo Vincent, and Soogal Fataw.
In addition to the arrest, six (6) motorbikes were retrieved from the site and over one hundred and twenty (120) changfang machines used in illegal mining operations were disabled.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned before the Tarkwa Circuit Court today, Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
The Ghana Police Service says it remains committed to intensifying anti-galamsey operations to preserve the country’s natural resources and bring offenders to justice.
