All Basic, Junior High and Senior High Schools in the Kumasi Metropolis in the Ashanti region have been directed to shut down on Monday December 4 and Friday December 8 due to the final funeral rites of the Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II
A statement by the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service said the students stay at home to allow the funeral rites go ahead peacefully.
“We wish to inform residents in Kumasi Metro, Asokore Mampong Municipal and the general public that activities being held for the final funeral rites of the late queen mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II demand that Basic schools within these areas be closed down on Monday, December 4, 2017.”
“On Friday, December 8, schools will close at 12 noon to enable students to reach home on time. Day students in the Senior High schools are also to stay home within these two days,” the statement added.
Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II was the Queen mother of the Ashanti Kingdom and mother of the current Asantehene, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, who is the youngest son of her five children.
She was the 13th Queen mother of the Ashanti Kingdom.
Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II died on 15 November 2016 in her sleep, aged 109.
She was buried at dawn in a full ceremony at the Breman Royal Mausoleum (Ban mu) on January 20, 2017
