The Core Season 2 continues with GHOne TV presenter, Emeline Nsingi Nkosi, sharing the stories of those in the creative industry, focusing on fashion, music, art, wellbeing and culture by taking on the jobs of each various individuals.
Episode three delves into the basket weaving craft with Mrs Owusu, a basket weaver based in Cantonments. Emeline spends the day as a Basket Weaver finding out more about how the business started, the importance of buying Ghana made and why bamboo is so special.
Basket weaving has its influence from Bolgatanga in the Upper East region of Ghana, it is said that many years ago, shepherds would make hats for themselves out of local grass. Markets began to open up in the region after the Second World War, in the form of the traditional round baskets with natural and coloured weaves made from local dyes.
It was during 1960s that the basket became more popular with Ghanaians from all over the country buying the round baskets as gifts at Christmas and on other occasions.
