Concerned citizens of Akyem Oda in the Eastern Region Friday poured onto the streets of the town to register their spleen over lack of infrastructural development.
The group, a month earlier, warned of its intention to demonstrate against the government for neglecting the town’s collapsing bridge as well as general poor road networks.
Hundreds of residents including local Journalists, drivers and traders took part in the demonstration to draw the government’s attention to their predicament. Some top government officials including the Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo Marfo hail from the area.
According to the protesting residents, the erstwhile John Mahama administration initiated moves to fix the roads, reconstructing the Jubilee Bridge but was not completed before the government left office in 2016, and since then the project has been abandoned.
Part of the bridge caved in a few weeks ago when a heavy truck drove over it. A call to the government to fix the collapsing bridge was ignored, the residents said, necessitating them to hit the streets.
The demonstrators are expected to present a petition to the President through the MCE for the area and subsequently address the media on the way forward.
Gilbert Kwasi Frimpong, spokesperson for the Association, told Starr News Akyem Oda and the Birim Central Municipality at large is retrogressing in development.
He said apart from the bad road networks, the Municipality lacks many basic social amenities depriving residents a dignified standard of living in contravention of the sustainable development goals.
