The Second Lady of Ghana, a known maternal health champion; Hajia Mrs. Samira Bawumia, has extended her humanitarian gestures to the people of the Nkwanta North district and Nkwanta South Municipality, in the Oti Region.

This forms part of an earlier donation to the Nkwanta South Municipal Hospital, Ofosu, Bonakye, Agoufie, Kue, Nyamborg, Sibi, Kanjo and Lakpor CHPS compounds.

Samira Bawumia addressing the people

Mrs Bawumia provided medical supplies and equipment, valued at about 500,000 Cedis to the nine health facilities in the newly-created region. The equipment included oxygen concentrators, carbon surgical blades, catheters, forceps, suctioning machines, ultra-sound machine, sphygmomanometer, delivery beds, emergency beds, X-ray view boards, stabilizers, nebulisers, crutches, transformers and medical intravenous poles. The supplies also contained syringes, blood collection tubes, baby powder, adapters,, bandage rolls, abdominal pads, blood administration sets, cannulas, breathing sets, elastic bandages, gloves, masks, surgical gowns, needles, scissors, among others.

According to the Second Lady, the intervention, supported by MEDShare (USA) and a team of US-based Ghanaian doctors led by Dr. Gadzey, is meant to improve general health outcomes and promote universal health care, particularly, among women and children.

“I am passionate about the wellbeing of women and children, who are the most vulnerable in society. It is in this regard, that, the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects, my NGO, seeks to contribute to addressing developmental challenges, affecting the poor and the needy”, she indicated.

The Oti Regional Minister, Mr Akwasi Owusu Yeboah, who was at the presented, expressed gratitude on behalf of the region, particularly, the beneficiary municipalities. He commended the Second Lady for choosing Oti, out of the many regions, to benefit from her philanthropy.

The medical superintendent of the Nkwanta South Municipal hospital, Dr. Anthony Gadzey, on his part, was full of appreciation for the Second Lady for providing them with exactly what they need to operate optimally. He appealed that the Second Lady adopts the few health facilities in the municipality. He also bemoaned the inadequacy of health facilities in the area.

Mrs. Bawumia is the brain behind the famous ‘Safe Delivery Project’, an initiative that seeks to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in deprived communities.

The Safe Delivery project is expected to distribute one hundred thousand (100,000) birth kits to expectant mothers in their third trimester, in deprived communities. The project has, additionally, trained traditional birth attendants and several health workers.

SEHP has also equipped other health facilities in deprived communities in Ghana; including the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, the Tamale Teaching Hospital, four (4)other  health centres, and ten (10) Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compounds with necessary medical and surgical equipment, as well as medical consumables.
