GHOne TV’s Alice Aryeetey has been selected for the 2021 Mandela Washington fellowship

The multiple-award-winning journalist and Deputy News Editor of GHOne TV was expected to spend six weeks in the United States of America participating in professional development training in leadership in civic engagement.

However, due to the global coronavirus pandemic, the program will be done virtually.

Alice is among 32 young Ghanaians selected from thousands of applicants who applied for the flagship programme of the U.S government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).

The fellows, between the ages of 25 and 35, are accomplished leaders who have established records of promoting innovation and positive impact in their communities and countries.

The programme is the brainchild of former US President, Barack Obama to nurture a generation of African leaders to push for economic growth, improve democracies and strengthen civil society structures that will make the continent a better place.

The young Ghanaians selected for the 2021 Mandela Washington Fellowship comprise young leaders from the business, public and private sectors, non-governmental organisations and social entrepreneurs.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship connects young African leaders to leadership training opportunities at some of America’s top universities to expand their leadership skills and knowledge.

For the past 10 years, Alice Aryeetey’s works as a journalist have mainly targeted the health and Education of women and children, as well as reporting on issues that affect persons with disabilities.

She is currently the Deputy News Editor of GHOne TV and also leads a group of volunteers who periodically support families with children living with all forms of disabilities.

Her volunteer group also visits local basic schools to empower young girls in diverse ways to achieve their dreams while promoting proper menstrual hygiene in rural and peri urban areas.

Upon completion of the fellowship, Alice aims to use the knowledge and skills acquired to advocate more inclusiveness in Ghana’s social policies through her organization and the platform she has as an influential Journalist.

She also aims to provide sustainable services and assistance to many girls with disabilities and their families by empowering them with sustainable livelihood opportunities to become more independent.

Alice Aryeetey was  adjudged the Best TV News Reporter and Best SDGs Reporter at the 2019 Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) awards.

She was also shortlisted by the Thomson foundation and the Foreign Press Association for the 2018 Young Journalist Award in the UK.

Alice was in 2018 named  the Most Promising Young  Journalist of the year in Ghana by the Ghana Journalists Association.

In 2017, she was adjudged the best Journalist in producing TV reports on Education and also won the GJA award for Best journalist in reporting on disability, a feat she first chalked in 2015 also.

She is the first journalist to be recognized and awarded by the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations through their Disability Excellence awards scheme.

Alice holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies from the Ghana Institute of Journalism.
