The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority, Ing. May Obiri-Yeboah has warned drivers against abandoning their faulty vehicles on the road beyond two hours.

According to her, the action is backed by the constitution and anyone who is found guilty will be punished.

The NRSA boss was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the New Times Corporation, NRSA, and Ghana Police Service’s newly launched road safety campaign dubbed ‘Preserving lives, sustaining our nation’, today Wednesday December 1,2021.

She told the media “it is a breach of the law and anyone who leaves or fixes their cars in the middle of the road should be arrested by the police. The law states that within one or two hours it must be taken away from the middle of the road to prevent accidents. This action is taking charge from today because it is already backed by the constitution and anyone who is found guilty will be punished. If you don’t have the towing truck then call the police service.”

She also advised transport services to make sure there are two drivers in every bus travelling for 500km or more to reduce the rate of road accidents this Christmas and New Year season.

“We are using this medium to tell them that the law is requesting that when you are travelling 500km or more you need two drivers in the bus”, she said.

Also speaking at the event, DCOP Martin Aryee stated that the police will support the media in any way possible to fulfil this campaign.

He also cautioned road users to renew their road certification a month before it expires because if anyone is caught on the road with even a day old expired road certificate, they will be arrested. He added that the cameras on the roads are still working so everyone should be cautious of their actions on the road.

“Please do not wait till your road certificate expires before you renew it. The law says you can do it within the last month to the expiring of the certificate so that when you are arrested you don’t say it was just yesterday or this morning.”

“I’m sure you are aware the cameras have been capturing the things you do on the road. I want to appeal to you not to be caught up in that way because when you think the policeman is not there, the camera is the policeman and that policeman will see you”.ion.

The launch was attended by the Deputy Chief of Police, Martin Aryee, Director General of the National Road Safety Authority, Ing. May Obiri-Yeboah, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Richard Nyarko, Managing Director of New Times Corporation, Mr. Martin Adu- Owusu and other dignitaries.

According to statistics, road accidents increased by ten percent this year. From January to October 2021, Ghana recorded 13,242 road accidents. Greater Accra and Ashanti recorded 65% of all car accidents and 72% of all motor accidents nationwide this year.
