The Eastern Regional branch of opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is calling on the government to take swift and inclusive action in response to the recent Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam spillage, which has had a profound impact on communities along the Volta Lake in the Eastern Region.
The NDC is standing in solidarity with the affected individuals and communities while urging the government to prioritize their needs.
What was supposed to be controlled spillage of Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam, commenced on September 15, 2023, but led to significant disruptions in the region, leaving many in dire circumstances.
Districts affected in the Eastern region Include:
Asuogyaman District: Abom Kwadwo, Abume, Kudi Korpe, and Atimpoku.
Fanteakwa District: Dedeso No 10, Adakope, Akakpo Korpe, Adavedzi, Ganyo, Twemeleveme, Kuase, Pretefour, and Abuakwao.
Upper Manya Krobo District: Akateng, Ayensu, and Akorkorma.
While the government has recently formed an inter-ministerial committee to address this crisis, the NDC is urging officials to conduct on-site visits to the affected communities.
The NDC believes that such visits are crucial to fully assess the extent of property damage and disruptions to livelihoods, providing vital information for effective relief and compensation efforts.
Moreover, the NDC alleges of apparent discrimination within state agencies involved in assessing the damage.
Certain communities mentioned above have reportedly been excluded from the assessment process, as stated in a release signed by Kojo Danquah, the Eastern Regional Communications Officer of NDC.
The NDC is calling on the President Akufo Addo to ensure that agencies responsible for managing such disasters adhere to the presidential oath, which obligates the President to act fairly and justly toward all citizens.
In these challenging times, the NDC expresses unwavering support for the affected residents and commends the individuals and organizations that have selflessly responded to the call for emergency operations and life-saving assistance within and beyond the affected communities.
After arriving in Ghana Sunday evening from his 4-day official visit to the United States, President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will on Monday, 16th October 2023, visit the districts severely hit by the floods occasioned by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.
The President will be joined on this tour by members of the Inter-Ministerial Committee, which has been set up to coordinate Government’s response to the flooding and to help bring relief to those affected.
