Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia is expected to commission the reconstruction of Appiatse township today 2nd May 2024 to fully restore life back into the community.

On the 20th of January 2022, a motorbike rider unfortunately went under a truck transporting explosives for the gold mine in Bogoso.

This caused an explosion in an area called the Appiatse, near Bogoso about 300km (180 miles) off the capital of Ghana, Accra.

After the explosion, people in the community rushed down to the scene to see what happened but unfortunately, a second blast occurred a few minutes later destroying dozens of buildings and injuring many.

A total of thirteen (13) people died, with some injured people rescued and referred to the Bogoso Government Hospital where they received treatment.

The government later launched Appiatse support funds to raise money, among others, to support the victims of the incident and reconstruct the community.

Five member committees chaired by Rev. Dr. Joyce R. Aryee, an eminent stateswoman.

Another committee named Appiatse Reconstruction Implementation Team (ARIT), was also established under the chairmanship of the then Deputy minister of lands and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Atwima Nwabiagya North Constituency, Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio, to rebuild the community.

The opiate redevelopment project started in September 2022 and was divided into three (3) phases.

The 1 comprises one hundred and twenty-four (124) Compressed Earth Bricks (CEB) houses.

One bedroom type 41, two bedroom type 35, bedroom type 23, four bedroom type 15, five bedroom type 8, six bedroom type 1, and seven bedroom type 1.

Phase two of the project is made up of houses that were partially affected but not totally destroyed by the explosion.

They are made up of concrete houses numbering fifty (50) individual houses.

Phase 3 has a total of seventy (70) units of buildings. The 1-3 bedrooms are semi-detached row houses and the 4-6 bedrooms are detached houses.

These buildings are going to be made with concrete blocks.

One bedroom will comprise 17 bedrooms, two bedrooms 23, three bedrooms 14, four bedrooms 12, five bedrooms 1, and six bedrooms 3.

In the entire project, six contractors were hired to undertake the project.

Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abu Jinapo, and Director General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) are expected to arrive at Appiatse at about 3pm to commission and land over the government-led project for the surviving victims of the explosive disaster.
