The Nkwatia Methodist Church has been gifted a new one-storey chapel by Opanyin Kwame Wadie and his family following the congregation’s eviction from their previous place of worship due to a land dispute.
The Nkwatia Methodist society, which began in 1971 with five women in a house at Nkwatia, had been worshipping on land provided by the chief of Nkwatia since 1974.
However, in 2023, a group claiming ownership of the land erected a wall around the church and ultimately locked the building, forcing the congregation to hold services in a private home since October 8, 2023.
Moved by the church’s plight, the Yeboah Wadie family, whose late matriarch Elizabeth Gyasiwaa was a former church member, undertook the construction of a new chapel.
The project was completed in six months.
During the dedication ceremony, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, commended the Wadie family for their generosity.
He highlighted that the church might have taken decades to construct a new building due to limited funds.
Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo acknowledged the family’s longstanding commitment to supporting the community and prayed for blessings upon them.
“You deserve to be blessed because you have honored God with this magnificent edifice,” He said.
In addition to the chapel, Opanyin Kwame Wadie, a renowned contractor, pledged GHC 50,000 to the church.
The dedication also coincided with his 70th birthday.
The Wadie family’s Kabaka Foundation has been recognized for numerous philanthropic projects, including building schools, a courtroom complex, and a police station, and providing scholarships and support for vulnerable groups across the country.
