The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has dismissed claims that he and his family owned the now-defunct DKM microfinance company during the 2016 elections.
Speaking at a rally in Nkoronza North in the Bono East Region as part of his four-day campaign tour, the former president urged DKM customers to demand their lost investments from Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Mr. John Mahama revealed that the company’s owner is a major financier of Dr. Bawumia and the ruling NPP’s 2024 campaign.
“Quite recently, the Vice President went to a town up north called Nandom. During his tour, he was flanked by a gentleman with whom he was interacting. The DKM DKM [microfinance company] you’ve been hearing about is owned by that man. It was confirmed by his uncle who was then Interior Minister, Ambrose Derry that the DKM owner was an NPP member and a financier of Dr. Bawumia.
“With the lies they peddled about us, today it has come to light that the owner of the company belonged to the NPP. He has channeled some of your funds he embezzled to the Bawumia’s campaign,” Mr. Mahama asserted.
In 2015, the Bank of Ghana suspended the license of Diamond Microfinance Limited (DKM) for breaching the Banking Act.
Repayment of funds to customers subsequently began spanning across two administrations.
