The United Kingdom’s Minister for Africa, Lord Collins is expected in Ghana today, 17th September, 2024 as part of efforts to deepen bilateral relations between the two anglophone countries.
While in the country, Lord Collins of Highbury will meet government officials, leaders in the local tech and innovation sector and food security agencies.
To assist Ghana’s efforts in mitigating the devastating effects of droughts and strengthen its Commonwealth ally’s food security systems, the visiting minister will pledge a financial package in several hundreds of thousands of pounds to augment progress made.
According to the British High Commission in Ghana, the funding will include “at least £1 million to support Ghana’s drought response” in addition to “£500,000 for a food fortification programme in northern Ghana”.
Lord Collins is also expected to pledge £3.8 million in partnership with Shell foundation to green energy investments in the country.
Ahead of his visit, Lord Collins noted that his visit to Ghana “was all about deepening our partnership for closer, stronger colloboration across various sectors” and working together to “address shared challenges and unlock new opportunities for both our nations”.
On her part, the British High Commissioner, Harriet Thompson, said the visit underpins the “importance of the UK-Ghana relationship to our new Government”.
Lord Collins came into the British Government when the Labour Party won a decisive victory, returning to power after 14 years.
He was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Deputy Leader of the House of Lords on 9th July, 2024.
Before joining Government, Lord Collins was Co-chair, All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Nutrition for Growth.
