Voting is a responsibility, not a choice – Political analyst

Philip Danso Appiagyei, a political analyst, has made a passionate call to Ghanaians to exercise their voting rights in the upcoming general elections.

Speaking on Ultimate FM‘s Cup of Tea with host Julius Caesar Anadem on the Ultimate Breakfast Show, he underscored the critical role of voting as both a right and a responsibility.

The discussion revolved around the importance of voter participation and the need for citizens to make informed decisions based on policies rather than apathy or indifference. Appiagyei addressed voter concerns and urged all eligible Ghanaians to reflect on their personal experiences and vote responsibly.

It comes on the back of advice from former president John Agyekum Kuffour who discouraged the growing apathy among voters who have chosen to rather sit on the fence than bother themselves casting a vote on December 7.

Addressing the growing apathy among voters, Appiagyei stated, “A good number of people who are unwilling to vote feel disappointed by the government. Their lives have not improved, so they see no reason to vote.”

However, he argued that this disappointment should fuel their participation at the polls.

“If your life has not been improved, that’s the more reason to vote for change. On the other hand, if you believe your life has been improved, that’s a reason to vote to retain the government,” he admonished.

Mr. Appiagyei stressed that abstaining from voting allows others to make decisions on behalf of the indifferent voter.

“If you don’t vote, you are allowing others to decide in your name and on your behalf. And what if they choose the wrong person for you? What are you going to do?” he queried.

Speaking directly to those who may feel indifferent to politics, he remarked, “Whether you live in the city or a village, as long as you are a citizen of Ghana, whatever the government does affects you. It’s essential to care because your vote influences policies that impact your life.”

On the issue of which candidate to support between the leading candidates, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and John Dramani Mahama, Appiagyei urged voters to focus on the policies they intend to implement.

“These two candidates represent different ideologies and approaches to governance. Ultimately, their policies should guide your decision. Look at the issues that matter—kitchen table issues, bread and butter issues. Examine your life and ask: Has it gotten better? If you believe a candidate can make your life even better, vote for them,” Appiagyei noted.

He emphasized that meaningful change depends on the policies implemented by leaders during their tenure, urging voters to weigh their choices thoughtfully. “Your decision should be based on which candidate’s policies align with your hopes for a better life.”

Buttressing his point, Appiagyei reminded electorates: “Voting is not just a right; it’s a responsibility. Whether you’re happy with the status quo or dissatisfied, your vote is the tool to shape the future. Don’t leave that decision to others.”

With the general elections just weeks away, Appiagyei’s call to action serves as a reminder to Ghanaians that every vote counts and has the power to determine the nation’s path forward.
