Communications Minister-designate Sam George has called for a transformation of Ghana Post into a modernized, multi-service digital hub. Speaking at his vetting on Thursday, January 30, he emphasized the need to rethink the role of the national postal service to align with global trends.
“Many people don’t know that Ghana Post sits under the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technologies, and Innovation,” he stated. “On Friday last week, I took briefings from the management of Ghana Post in preparation for this vetting. And one of the charges I gave to them was to rethink the whole essence of the post office.”
Acknowledging that post offices worldwide have evolved beyond mail and parcel delivery, George stressed the importance of leveraging digital infrastructure to expand services. He highlighted the potential of Ghana’s enhanced Community Information Centers and collaboration with the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) to transform post offices into 360-degree service centers.
“The post office may be seen as a dying concern, but in other parts of the world, it has become a hub for several services beyond just delivery. We need to make it more than just receiving and sending parcels,” he added.
