The Northern Police Command of the Ghana Police Service has successfully apprehended Faisal Alhassan, identified as the ringleader and two others said to be behind the Tamale Central market shooting incident.

He is accused of orchestrating and arming his gang to open fire indiscriminately on traders and individuals on a parcel of land allegedly owned by businessman, Alhassan Fuseini in the Tamale Central Market.

Faisal Alhassan was arrested on February 10, 2025, alongside Osman Mohammed, the Nyohini Zaachi, and Yakubu Mohammed, known as Chairman.

Earlier Tahiru Sulemana and another accused who had previously been detained with the police under the orders of High Court.

Following the arrest, Faisal Alhassan has been transferred to Accra by police command on the orders of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The other two suspects are currently in custody pending further instructions from the court.

Their arrest follows the issuance of several warrants: Faisal Alhassan under Warrant No. 01/2025, Osman Mohammed Nyohini Zaachi under Warrant No. 02/2025, and Yakubu Mohammed under Warrant No. 03/2025.

A fourth suspect, Rashid Zakaria, remains at large, according to the police.

Key Facts:

The three suspects were declared wanted by the Tamale High Court on February 3, 2025, for failing to appear regarding their involvement in the January 28, 2025 shooting incident linked to a land dispute in the Tamale Central Market.

All three suspects face serious charges: conspiracy to commit a crime (causing harm); causing harm; and the use of an offensive weapon, in violation of Sections 70, 23 (1), and 69 of the Criminal Offenses Act of 1960 (Act 29).

The prosecution has presented compelling evidence that indicates a coordinated attack executed by these individuals, aimed specifically at inflicting harm on Alhassan Seidu, Eric Kofi Mensah, and Shaibu Abdul Ganiu, using firearms in the process.

Preliminary investigations reveal that a youth vigilante group affiliated with the Gulkpegu Chief Palace in Tamale, led by the fugitive Faisal Alhassan, targeted a businessman and several others during this attack.

According to the prosecution, Faisal Alhassan not only organized the assault but also equipped his gang members, who indiscriminately discharged firearms on the disputed land. The assault resulted in injuries to Alhassan Seidu, Eric Kofi Mensah, and Shaibu Abdul Ganiu, all of whom sustained gunshot wounds and were admitted to the Tamale Teaching Hospital. Furthermore, Tahiru Sulemana, 30, also suffered gunshot wounds to both thighs.

Eyewitness accounts confirm that the group departed the Gulkpenaa Palace in Tamale and proceeded to the Tamale Central Market with the intent to attack a youth vigilante group known as Alkada.

Court evidence shows that the suspects were armed with high-caliber weapons, including G3 and AK-47 rifles, as well as a 9mm firearm.

A police source present in court during the arrests confirmed to Noah Nash Hoenyefia of GhOne TV that efforts are underway to locate the fourth suspect.
