The Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has urged the deputy minister-Designate for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah to push for the privatisation of the energy sector despite expected resistance.
During Gyan-Mensah’s vetting on February 25 in Parliamet, Afenyo-Markin expressed concerns over the financial strain on the country due to inefficiencies in the energy sector.
He emphasized that privatisation could enhance efficiency and sustainability however, it is only a bold leader that can drive real reforms in the sector.
“I pray that this privatisation that the previous administration had initiated, which somehow became political and was abandoned, in your time, when the same forces of darkness in the sector are frustrating you, you will be bold to implement the privatisation,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He further stressed the urgency of reform, arguing that without firm leadership, the sector could collapse. “I support privatisation because I believe it will bring efficiency. I hope you will be bold enough to take that step,” he added.
Afenyo-Markin also pointed out the repetitive political pattern in which inefficiencies within state institutions, especially in the energy sector, are used as campaign topics, yet successive governments fail to take decisive action.
This remarks from the Minority leader follows ongoing debates about energy sector reforms in Ghana, as the country grapples with financial losses, unreliable power supply, and the need for improved service delivery.
