Veteran German tactician Winfried Schäfer has pledged to restore Ghana’s footballing dominance after being appointed as the Black Stars’ new technical director.
His appointment comes in the wake of the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, leading to a restructuring of the team’s technical setup.
Schäfer, having coached the likes of Cameroon and Jamaica, shared his excitement about the role, highlighting his dedication to revitalizing the Black Stars and elevating Ghanaian football as a whole.
“Dear fans of our Black Stars I’m very proud to be the new director of football of Ghana and want to thank Ghana Football Association for their confidence in me,” he posted on Facebook.
He emphasized that his immediate priority is to support head coach Otto Addo in guiding the Black Stars to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with key qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar set for this month.
“We want to ensure Ghana is represented in the best way possible in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.”
He however pledged to enhance Ghanaian football from grassroots to national level, providing necessary support for young players, both boys and girls.
“But whatever we do, we can only do it together. The players and the coaches, the federation and the medical staff, the clubs and academies, the sport ministry, and most of all, we will need you, the fans. We need your support. Only together can we achieve our goals,” he added.
Meanwhile, coach Otto Addo is expected to name his squad in the coming days, with the team aiming to secure a vital victory to bolster their qualification prospects.
