Chairman of the Youth and Sports Committee in Parliament, Ernest Norgbey is raising concerns about the funds alloted to the Sports Ministry in the 2025 budget.
According to the lawmaker, the importance of sports in fostering social cohesion among Ghanaians is enough cause for government to make it a priority sector in its spending.
He said he did not have issues with the funds appropriated for the national sports teams but drew a red line when it came to the ministry’s allocation.
“The totality of the amount of money that given to the ministry which is woefully inadequate for our sports because I believe that sports brings us together. It unites us. And so no matter the situation, we need to make substantial budgetary allocation to that ministry,” he said in an exclusive interview with GH One TV.
Last month, Parliament of Ghana approved an allocation of GH₵65,899,456 for the services of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for the year ending December 31, 2025.
The approval came with concerns from Members of Parliament over the lack of allocation for maintaining sports infrastructure in the country.
Mr. Norgbey, during the interview, observed that Ghanaians would not have misgivings about how much is given to the teams like the Black Stars if it wins football games.
The Ashaiman Member of Parliament said he had raised his concerns about the allocation with the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson who assured him, the sector will see an improved budget in the subsequent years.
