Take a strong stance against atrocities in Togo – Activist to Ghanaian gov’t

Farida Bemba Nabourema calls on Ghana to speak out against President Faure Gnassingbé’s repressive regime amid escalating violence in Togo.

The Founder and Executive Director of the Katutu Civil Rights Center, Farida Bemba Nabourema, is urging the Ghanaian government to demonstrate leadership and take a strong stance against the atrocities being perpetrated by the Faure Gnassingbé-led government in Togo.

According to Farida, the Ghanaian government must leverage its influence within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to call out the repressive regime in Togo, thereby upholding Ghana’s touted credentials as a beacon of democracy on the continent and globally. Farida underscored that should the situation deteriorate Ghana will be heavily impacted in terms of refugee numbers.

The situation in Togo has taken a dire turn, with seven people killed during protests by Togolese youth between June 26 and 28, 2025. Government-backed security forces interrupted the protests, leaving many injured and hundreds detained. The protests were sparked by amendments to the Togolese 1992 constitution, which have effectively allowed President Faure Gnassingbé to remain in power without term limits, despite being in office for over 20 years.

Farida Bemba Nabourema has condemned the inhumane treatment of civilians and called on the Ghanaian government to intervene. She highlighted the oppressive measures being used by President Faure Gnassingbé’s government, including the throttling of internet access and requests for the extradition of opposition figures. These actions, Farida argues, are a clear indication of the regime’s repressive nature.

In a passionate plea, Farida questioned the relevance of ECOWAS, noting that the sub-regional body is only vocal when it comes to coup d’états but shows no concern when citizens’ rights are being abused. She called on ECOWAS to desist from selective interventions in dealing with issues, emphasizing the need for a more consistent and principled approach to promoting human rights and democracy in the region.

The international community must take notice of the unfolding crisis in Togo and take decisive action to support the people of Togo in their struggle for democracy and human rights. The Ghanaian government, in particular, has a critical role to play in leveraging its influence within ECOWAS to bring pressure to bear on the Faure Gnassingbé regime.
