Ablekuma North Rerun: Both NDC, NPP optimistic of winning

NDC and NPP remain confident as over 6,000 voters head to the polls in Ablekuma North’s parliamentary rerun.

Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, has expressed strong optimism about the party’s chances in today’s parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

The Electoral Commission (EC) is conducting the rerun to conclude the collation process and restore parliamentary representation to the area.

Over 6,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots across 19 polling stations where results from the December 2024 general elections could not be verified.

Speaking on StarrToday with Tutuwaa Danso, Tanko-Computer said the NDC is fully prepared and expects a decisive victory, accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of disorganization and dishonesty regarding their participation in the election.

“These people have shown time and again that they are the most unprincipled political party one can think of. Frankly, I’m not surprised—they are also the most disorganized. For the past three days, they’ve been publicly exposing that disorganization, even as they claimed they weren’t campaigning.

“But we are not worried. We have fully prepared ourselves for this election. Our team is ready—our agents are trained, and the ballot papers are secured. As for the NPP, we are going to deliver a heavy blow. Out of the 19 key polling stations, I can assure you—we will win at least 15. We are ready, and we will beat them soundly.”

Meanwhile, Tema East MP and NPP member Charles Forson also expressed confidence that the ruling party will win at least 14 of the 19 polling stations.

He maintained that the NPP is focused and poised for victory, predicting that their candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, will emerge winner by close of polls.

“As mentioned earlier, we are confident of winning in 14 of them, and we will hold our ground in the remaining three. I firmly believe that by tomorrow, around 5 p.m.—let’s say between 6 and 7 p.m.—Akua Afriyie will be declared the winner.”

The Ghana Police Service has deployed officers to all 19 polling stations.

The Police have urged the public to comply with electoral regulations, cooperate with security personnel, and report any suspicious activity via emergency lines 18555 or 192.

The rerun follows political tension and controversy. The NPP had earlier accused the Electoral Commission of bias and claimed the decision to conduct the rerun was politically motivated in favour of the NDC.

The party declared a boycott of the exercise, describing it as illegitimate.

However, in a surprising development, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, is taking part in the rerun despite the party’s boycott.
