The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially declared Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner of the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025—marking the first time the NDC has captured the seat.
Aubynn secured 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, who garnered 3,881 votes.
The contest was decided by a slim margin of 209 votes, with all 281 polling stations reporting.
The rerun was held to resolve collation and verification challenges that disrupted the December 2024 general elections.
While 18 of the initially disputed 37 polling stations had their results certified, fresh voting was required in the remaining 19 to complete the electoral process.
Despite an official NPP boycott, Nana Akua Afriyie participated in the rerun, citing a responsibility to defend her mandate after the Accra High Court dismissed her injunction bid.
The NDC’s victory flips a long-held NPP stronghold and ends months of political uncertainty in the constituency.
It also cements a significant milestone for the opposition party, which has never won the seat since its creation.
The EC’s declaration brings closure to one of the most closely watched and hotly contested reruns in recent memory.
