The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources says more than 7.6 million trees have already been planted across the country under the government’s flagship reforestation programme, the Tree for Life initiative.
The initiative, launched by President John Dramani Mahama in March 2025 at Nkawie in the Ashanti Region, aims to plant 30 million trees nationwide by the end of the 2025 rainy season in October.
Delivering an update at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, said the initiative reflects the government’s strong commitment to environmental restoration.
“On June 5, the President again led the nation to commence the tree-planting exercise, emphasising the government’s commitment to planting 30 million trees,” the Minister stated. “As of mid-July 2025, a total of 7.6 million seedlings have been distributed and planted, representing 25% of the target.”
Out of this number, 2.3 million seedlings were planted by the private sector, showcasing strong collaboration between government and industry.
The Minister said the national planting campaign is ongoing and expressed optimism that the full target would be achieved by October, aligning with the close of the rainy season.

The Tree for Life initiative forms part of broader efforts to combat deforestation, land degradation, and the adverse effects of climate change in Ghana. It is one of the Ministry’s flagship programmes aimed at restoring forest cover and promoting environmental sustainability.
