Residents of Denase in the Afigya Kwabre North District of the Ashanti Region are reeling in grief and fear following a deadly gun attack on Thursday night that claimed two lives and left three others injured.
Among the deceased is Peggy Ayelbassah, a young woman with aspirations of becoming a nurse. Her life was tragically cut short while en route to Salaga for an admission interview at a nursing training college. According to local sources, gunmen opened fire on her vehicle during the attack.
The Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Collins Adomako-Mensah, confirmed her death in a Facebook post, describing it as a heartbreaking loss. He revealed that Peggy had contacted him via WhatsApp just a day before the incident — a detail that has deeply unsettled the community.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of terror as gunshots rang out without warning, forcing residents to flee for their lives. The injured victims were rushed to the Saint Patrick Hospital in Offinso, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Local leaders believe the incident may have been a targeted attack rather than a random act of robbery.
“This didn’t look like a robbery. The way the shooting was carried out, it seemed targeted,” said Kwabena Asamoah, Unit Committee Chairman for the Denase Electoral Area.
The incident has intensified anxiety in Denase, a community already grappling with a history of violent attacks in recent years. Residents are now calling for heightened security and urgent action from law enforcement agencies.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation and assured the public that it will pursue the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
