The National Communications Authority (NCA) has revoked the authorisations of nine radio stations across the country, including three linked to Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The closures, part of a wider compliance exercise, follow repeated breaches of broadcasting regulations and failure to meet licensing obligations.
According to NCA in a statement on Tuesday, August 12, enforcement teams have been deployed to ensure the affected stations immediately cease transmission.
The initial suspension, which affected major stations including Asaase Radio, Happy FM, and Wontumi Radio, stemmed from breaches of Regulations 54 and 56 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011.
President Mahama had intervened to grant the suspended stations a 30-day grace period, stressing the need to enforce regulations while safeguarding media freedom.
By the July 12 deadline, most stations had taken steps toward compliance, but six — Donplus Multimedia Limited (105.9 FM, Ho), Dreams Ghana Media Limited (104.9 FM, New Abirem), Jam Multimedia Limited (101.3 FM, Kintampo), Jewel Group Limited (102.7 FM, Duayaw Nkwanta), Kpandai Star Community Radio (107.3 FM, Kpandai), and Unique Gateway Communication Limited (105.7 FM, Nkawkaw) — failed to act, leading to their shutdown.
The statement noted, “The National Communications Authority (NCA) has suspended the operations of nine (9) radio stations for various infractions. This action follows the expiration of the 30-day grace period granted by the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama for defaulting stations to remedy the violation of the laws and regulations governing FM radio broadcasting in Ghana.”
The NCA has indicated that further shutdowns could follow if other stations are found in breach of their authorisations.
