Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has announced that government will deploy 5,000 graduates in agriculture and veterinary science across the country to assist farmers and strengthen extension services.
Speaking at the 2025 Ghana Teacher Prize in Ho, she said the deployment was part of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s “Feed Ghana” program. “This year under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture the Feed Ghana program is being rolled out with tangible supports. This also includes 5,000 graduates in agriculture and veterinary science who will be deployed across the country including the Volta Region of course,” she stated.
The Vice President explained that the graduates will “work side by side with farmers providing modern extension services, sharing new techniques and helping bridge research and practice.” She added that the initiative is also designed to foster mutual learning between graduates and local farmers. “At the same time I hope and I know that the youth will be ready to learn from the farmers too,” she stressed.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the program is intended to boost productivity and improve livelihoods. By bridging the gap between research and practice, she said, agriculture will be positioned as a reliable source of employment for young people.
She further disclosed that vegetable farming will receive targeted support under the program. “We are also looking at special attention being given to vegetable farming which is one of the strengths of this region,” she highlighted.
Touching on the cultural context, the Vice President said the annual Asogli Yam Festival provides inspiration for the initiative. “Your Majesty, the annual Asogliyam Festival offers a powerful cultural lens through which to feel the promise of Feed Ghana,” she remarked.
