The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has rendered an unreserved apology to staff of the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua following last week’s attack on the facility by a group of youth claiming to be affiliated with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The chaos occurred on November 7, 2025, when a group calling itself “The Reset Youth Wings” stormed the hospital premises, pasting posters bearing the inscription, “The Reset Youth Wings Going to Come After You. Go on Transfer Peacefully.”

Security personnel at the facility initially resisted the group’s actions, leading to a brief scuffle. However, the youth went ahead to post the notices in several wards and units.

According to leaders of the group, their action was in protest against the alleged refusal of the Medical Director, Dr. Akoto Ampaw, to comply with a transfer directive to the Volta Region. They claimed Dr. Ampaw was among several medical administrators transferred months ago, but had declined to move.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) swiftly condemned the attack, describing it as “unscrupulous and lawless.”

In a strongly worded statement signed by its President, Dr. Frank Serebour, and General Secretary, Dr. Richard Selormey, the Association demanded immediate state action, including the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators who were “clearly identifiable from the video” circulating online.

The GMA further urged the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to ensure the safety of Dr. Akoto Ampaw and all hospital staff, warning that any further threats or harm to the Medical Director could trigger an immediate suspension of work by doctors at the facility.

Head of Clinical Services at the Eastern Regional Hospital, Dr. Foster Amponsah Manu, said the attack has created fear among staff and affected theor mood.

He explained that, although the Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Arko Akoto Ampaw, was initially transferred, however, the transfer was reversed later by the Ghana Health Service.

Speaking on behalf of the Regional Minister, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for New Juaben South, Ransford Owusu Boakye, said the unfortunate incident was not sanctioned by either the government or the NDC party.

He assured the hospital’s management and staff of maximum protection and said measures are being put in place together with the Police to prevent any recurrence of such attacks to guarantee the safety of all hospital workers and patients.

He assured that the perpetrators will be pursued and punished.
