Security analyst Samuel Owusu says the final mediation report on the Bawku conflict—expected to be submitted to President John Mahama by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II—could mark a decisive turning point in ending the decades-long hostilities if government implements the recommendations swiftly and effectively.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Tuesday, December 2, Mr. Owusu said the nation is eager to see lasting peace restored to the troubled enclave.

“Well it is my hope and belief of every Ghanaian that this as you rightly mentioned the Bawku protracted conflict comes to an end and that peace will take place and people will be able to allow a chance for development and a very cordial relationship between the two factions.”

His comments follow confirmation that the Asantehene has completed the final phase of his mediation efforts after months of engaging both Mamprusi and Kusasi leadership. The Manhyia-led process was initiated to break the cycle of violence that has destabilized Bawku for years.

Mr. Owusu noted that the responsibility now shifts to the state once the report reaches the Presidency.

“We believe that when the findings are put together and admitted to His Excellency the President it now becomes the duty of the state to ensure that the recommendations are well implemented and then proactive measures as far as security is concerned are also put in place.”

He emphasised that peacebuilding would require compromise from all sides.

“In every situation such as conflict when mediation mechanisms are put in place… there is no winner, there’s no loser but then there’s always a middle ground where each party is expected to compromise his or her interest to allow the system to gain some stability and understanding.”

Mr. Owusu expressed optimism that, with proper leadership and community engagement, the mediation outcome could finally pave the way for enduring peace.

He said leaders must prepare their supporters to accept the final decisions to “ensure that we can gain some stability and understanding.”
