The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has unanimously backed President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as the bloc’s candidate for the Chairmanship of the African Union in 2027, when the rotating leadership is scheduled to return to West Africa.
The decision was taken during the Ninety-Fifth Ordinary Session of the Council, held in Abuja, Nigeria, on December 12, 2025.
The Council highlighted Ghana’s significant role within ECOWAS and its contribution to the bloc’s international standing as key reasons for the endorsement.
According to the recommendation, ECOWAS aims to ensure its interests are actively represented and promoted in continental institutions, including the African Union.
The formal adoption of the declaration of support is expected to be confirmed by the Authority of Heads of State and Government on Sunday.
In its official communiqué, the Council noted, “We are determined to work in a concerted manner to support the candidacies of ECOWAS Member States or their nationals in international organizations, including the African Union, in order to ensure that the interests of ECOWAS continue to be promoted and protected.”
The endorsement marks a significant milestone for Ghana as it positions President Mahama to lead the AU, reflecting both the country’s diplomatic influence and the bloc’s collective support for its member states in regional and international leadership roles.
