Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has called for peaceful coexistence between the Mamprusi and Kusasi communities, urging both sides to respect the rule of law and work together to end decades of conflict in the Bawku traditional area.
The Asantehene made the appeal on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, when he submitted his mediation report on the Bawku chieftaincy dispute to President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House. He emphasized that the mediation was conducted to promote understanding and reconciliation, not to assign blame.
“I am not here to say this one was wrong or that one was right; I will present the facts as they are, and that is what should be binding on all of us,” Otumfuo said.
He explained that both the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress had mandated him to use traditional mediation mechanisms to find an amicable solution to the Bawku situation, with the understanding that the outcome would be enforced by the government.
The Asantehene highlighted that historical disputes, court rulings, and colonial-era interventions have complicated the conflict over the years. He also praised the willingness of both sides to engage in dialogue and make concessions for peace.
“Be that as it may, in the interest of co-existence, peace and human dignity, my proposed solution…is to ensure a lasting and enduring peaceful resolution for all parties,” he added.
President Mahama commended Otumfuo for his dedication, patience, and commitment to national unity, assuring that the government would carefully review the recommendations and act in accordance with Ghana’s Constitution and Supreme Court rulings.
The submission of the mediation report has raised hopes that the long-standing disputes between the Mamprusi and Kusasi communities may finally give way to peaceful coexistence and stability in Bawku.
