The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emphasized that the government’s plans to strengthen Ghana’s mass transport system are not intended to sideline private operators.
Speaking on GHToday with Lily Mohammed on Monday, January 19, 2026, NDC communications team member Hamza Sayibu Suhuyini said the private sector remains a critical partner in national development, including in transport.
Suhuyini explained that while the government has partnered with an Indian company producing buses for Ghana, engagement with private transport operators continues to be essential. He stressed that supporting private businesses aligns with broader economic objectives.
“Our objective is not to kill the private sector,” he said, noting that private players are expected to remain key contributors not only in transport but across all sectors of the economy.
He acknowledged delays linked to production timelines, which are beyond the government’s direct control, but assured that steps are being taken to accelerate delivery once the buses are ready.
Meanwhile, collaboration with private operators remains necessary to meet public demand.
Suhuyini added that while private participation is encouraged, the government must lead the sector to ensure structure, coordination, and accessibility for commuters.
