Ghana has initiated talks to secure the former residence of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in Guinea, where the late Ghanaian leader lived and worked during his final years as co-president of Guinea alongside Ahmed Sékou Touré.
The move, directed by President John Dramani Mahama, is intended to preserve the historic property, renovate it, and incorporate it into broader efforts to protect Nkrumah’s legacy while promoting historical tourism that links key moments of his life in both Ghana and Guinea.
The decision was formally communicated to the Sékou Touré family on Saturday during a visit by a Ghanaian delegation led by Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, shortly after the investiture of Guinea’s President, Mamady Doumbouya.
During the visit, the delegation toured the abandoned residence and held discussions with representatives of the Sékou Touré family, spanning three generations and led by the former Guinean leader’s eldest son.
Commenting on the initiative, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the effort underscores Ghana’s commitment to preserving shared African heritage.
“This is about protecting an important part of Africa’s shared history,” he stated, adding that “the process will be handled transparently, and the public will be kept informed.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently negotiating acquisition terms with the family and working with preservation experts to assess the condition of the property and plan its restoration.
