As Parliament resumes sitting, the Executive Director of parliamentary watchdog PN Africa has called on both the Majority and Minority caucuses to work together and prioritize national interest over partisan politics.
He noted that citizens now have greater access to parliamentary proceedings through live television broadcasts and social media, unlike in the past when activities were mainly reported through newspapers and radio.
Speaking on Starr Today, Obeng said this increased visibility means lawmakers’ conduct is under constant public scrutiny.
“Today, people can watch Parliament live on television and on social media. We do not appreciate the needless show of bravado that is sometimes displayed on the floor of Parliament,” he said.
Obeng stressed that unnecessary displays of partisanship undermine public confidence and that citizens are able to judge whether representatives are acting in the national interest.
“Citizens are able to see when Parliament and parliamentarians put the national interest first at the expense of partisan political interests,” he added.
He urged lawmakers to focus on cooperation and responsible conduct as parliamentary business resumes.
