The Ghana U-20 women’s national team, the Black Princesses, were held to a 2-2 draw by South Africa’s Basetsana in the first leg of their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying tie at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts started the match strongly and opened the scoring in the 33rd minute through Agnes Yeboah, sending the home fans into jubilant celebration.

After the break, South Africa responded early in the second half with a well-worked team goal in the 48th minute, leveling the score. Not to be outdone, the Black Princesses quickly regained the lead just four minutes later when Linda Owusu converted from a corner to make it 2-1.

However, the Basetsana battled back, and in the 60th minute, Zoe October unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box to level the match at 2–2, thrilling the crowd.

Ghana thought they had snatched the win late on, but a goal by Jessica Appiah was ruled out for offside in the 87th minute, much to the disappointment of the home supporters.

The draw leaves the qualifier wide open ahead of the second leg, scheduled for February 14 in South Africa, where both teams will fight for a place in the final round of African qualifying for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

Fans are now buzzing about the return fixture as Ghana aims to secure another appearance at the world stage and extend their record at the tournament.
