President John Dramani Mahama has urged African Union member states to ratify protocols and strengthen the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
Speaking in Arusha at the Court’s 2026 Judicial Year opening, he emphasized that the Court must remain independent and serve all Africans impartially.
“I call upon African Union member states who have not yet ratified the Protocol to please do so without delay. To my colleagues in those countries, I assure you that you have nothing to fear from this Court,” he said.

He further stressed the need for nations to respect and implement the Court’s judgments in good faith and to allow individuals and NGOs direct access to the Court.
Mahama described these measures as crucial to reinforcing justice, human dignity, and accountability on the continent.
Highlighting the Court’s 20 years of service, the President said it has repeatedly demonstrated “fortitude and courage to recalibrate our moral compass” and guide nations in observing human rights and democratic principles.

He called on African leaders to view the Court as a central pillar in Africa’s development and human rights protection, urging sustained engagement and commitment to its mission.
